In an anthology

So it's finally been decided which poems will make it into the first print anthology of the Poster Poems series that has been running for the last year on the Guardian book blog, and Billy Mills has kindly included one of mine. It's not one of my best, it was posted in my first few weeks here, when I was just getting started writing the poetry and I was determined to rise to the Poster Poem challenge every week, regardless of the quality of the poem that I'd written.

I hope that I'll be able to add some better ones when the challenge starts up again. Watch that space! (I've added the link to the Poster Poems into my bloglist so you can browse there to see what it's all about).

Thanks to Billy for my inclusion! It's an inspiration for me to improve on my work (hopefully!) in the future.

Dreaming...

Whilst dreaming of you
I slept through the rain
And I woke up to
glorious sunshine,
Only to find that
you were just a dream.

You passed in the night
In a moment I
thought everlasting.
And as rain returns,
I drift back to sleep
to dream once again.

  1. Congrats on getting one of your poems selected. This is a great accomplishment! :) I'm excited for you and can't wait to see what others along the way are selected.

Everyone starts some where, but what an inspiration you are to me to just start. I find that more and more it's just a matter of getting that inspiration, finding the time and subject matter to write (something, anything). One thing I've noticed is that your blogs help me to think outside the box of how to find my inspiration to write.

Definitely looking forward to more. :)

  4. E,

I think I look forward to your comments here as much as you do to mine over at yours. Sorry I've not been there for a while!

It's a great feeling to be selected for something like this, but I am the first to admit that it wasn't the best poem that I've done or could do.

My poetry at the moment is still filling a need in me, there is still something which needs to be expressed, which previously I would have kept in and not had an outlet for. So when I first started out I don't think I was particularly disciplined, it was more outpourings of feelings and hoping that I happened upon a good way to say them. I would advise you to just start, post, and invite comments. If you need to do email me (pinkerbell199@googlemail.com) direcly for some support, advice or to let me know that you've posted a poem and you'd like some comments.

I understand how incredibly vulnerable it makes a person feel to put their emotions into poetic form. I think because they are no longer exclusively ours anymore. They are open to interpretation and criticism, which is the key thing to realise. Not everyone will like our style, or what we have to say, but there will be others who do. You can't please everybody, so the main thing is to write for your own sake and your own enjoyment.

Janine and Shadow - thanks. I thought it was sort of whimsical and effortless - I'd just woken up from a rather nice dream about a man who I could never have... sigh.

  10. Yes it's just a flighty little thing isn't it? I think it may offer some light relief alongside more epic poetry which others will have managed to write.

Thanks all for your comments. The Poster Poems is back up and running again (see my bloglist) and at the moment they are inviting poems about fame. I've not had a chance to have a go at one yet, hopefully I will before the comments close.
